Meeting #5 with Jaelen Myers & Hilary Lewis + Dr. Brandon Mahan

Stingrays, drones, and how to age sharks using microchemistry…

Ph.D. Candidate Jaelen Myers

A massive thank you to Ph.D. candidate Jaelen Myers (AKA Stingray.savy on Instagram) for walking us through her work on flat sharks (stingrays) and teaching us how to use drones to study marine organisms in the most minimally invasive way!

Some highlights from the talks included:

  • Getting a glimpse into Jaelen’s Ph.D research on stingray feeding ecology

  • Seeing two different types of drones in person and learning about the different ways they can be used to study marine organisms

Thank you to Dr. Brandon Mahan and honors student Hilary Lewis for an absolutely captivating talk and workshop on elasmobranch age determination! It was so cool to give aging sharks a go; admittedly, it is indeed harder than it looks! Some highlights from her talk included:

  • Hearing from Dr. Mahan and Hilary about novel techniques for aging elasmobranchs

  • Getting to partake in a hands-on workshop testing out our new knowledge of aging sharks from vertebrae photographs and elemental bands!!
