Expedition Dorsal Effect

This week-long trip to Indonesia offered students insight into the fish markets in Lombok, one of the largest shark landing sites in Indonesia.

On the second visit, the group saw 90+ sharks landed, including wobbegongs and scalloped hammerheads.

Shark Fisheries and Processing:

  • Tanjung Luar Fish Market is one of the largest shark landing sites in Indonesia.

  • Boats go out for 1-2 week trips to fish sharks using longlines, returning to the market to sell their catches.

    • Three six-gill sharks were caught and sold for ~AUD$400 each

  • All of the shark is used; none of it goes to waste in processing.

Shining a light on this industry is so important, it will shape how the next generation of ocean conservationists see, think, and act.

With this blog, we wanted to share some of what we’ve learned. We’re not here to pass judgment on anyone’s livelihood, but to understand the intricacies of the industry and help inform future conservation and management efforts grounded in the community's values.
