Meeting #30 Leopard Sharks in Queensland

Our first meeting of the Trimester had two parts. The first part of the presentation, given by our President, Kiesha Lara Venga, covered the main goals, ideas, and potential future events that could be held at the FINstitute. Our mission is to act as a hub of support for Australian and Indonesian shark conservation and research initiatives.

Next, we heard from exec team member and JCU Master’s student Alexa Hoffman. We first learnt about her not-so-linear path to get to where she is today and got a fascinating look into her research on Indo-Pacific Leopard Shark movements in Southeast Queensland. We heard about the different processes she uses in order to track individual sharks, including drone surveys and acoustic tracking. Both of these methods have been vital in gaining a full understanding of how these sharks use coastal waters.

We’d like to extend a big THANK YOU to Alexa for an amazing presentation! We are looking forward to a great Trimester 3!
