Meeting #32 Shark Stress Physiology & Underwater Photography

This meeting we had a great talk about shark stress physiology from @shamil.debaere and how learning more about this can be useful in conservation.

We also had an amazing Lightroom tutorial from our lovely Co-Founder @aliah.in.waterland where we learned how to bring out the life in underwater photos!

Some highlights from the talks included:

  • Gained insights into differences in physiology between different shark species and drivers of variability in chronic stress responses in elasmobranchs compared to other species and taxa.

  • Got a glimpse into the measurement of stress biomarkers and role of ACTH in stimulating tissues that release stress hormones in elasmobranchs.

  • Learned about Aliah’s career path and expanding interest and skills in underwater photography, and the resources and cameras available at different stages of interest.

  • Got experience with Adobe Lightroom, its functions, and different ways in which underwater photos can be edited based on stylistic presence.

Thank you to Shamil Debaere for sharing his Ph.D. research on chronic stress responses and physiology of three different elasmobranch species!

Thank you as well to Aliah Banchik for presenting on her experiences with underwater photography and for running an awesome photo-editing workshop!
